The Dead will Hear and Live

“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live” (John 5:25).

When is this time? It started with Jesus’ ministry when he announced the kingdom of God. “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel [Mark 1:15].” In John 5:25, Jesus said the HOUR IS NOW and it is here. The time when the spiritual dead, those dead in sin would hear and come to live, started with His appearance.

Who is the dead Jesus is referring? It is all men who are spiritually dead in their sins. “You were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience [Eph 2:1-2]. “We were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ-by grace you have been saved and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus [Eph 2:5-6].” “All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one” (Rom 3:12). “Leave the dead to bury their own dead” (Luke 9:60).

Who will live? Those who hear. Who are those who hear? “Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God” (John 8:47). “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me ” (John 10:27). “Those whom he predestined he also called” (Rom 8:30). “He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will” (Eph 1:5).

Jesus announced that His kingdom would be one where the spiritual dead will hear his voice and those who hear will be raised from spiritual death to a new spiritual life in Him. Those whom He will raise to live are those whom the Father has predestined to be adopted as sons of God through Jesus Christ. They are the once He has given to Jesus to save. Jesus said those the Father gave to Him will come to Him and He will raise them to live. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day” (John 6:44). “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word” (John 17:6). In this last verse Jesus was saying that AMONG the world (not the whole world) there are people of God and they WERE God’s (Yours they were) before by predestination. These people God the Father gave to Him to save and He then manifested God to them. These are the dead sinners who WILL hear the voice of Jesus and they WILL come to live.
