We can obey God. We can follow Him. His commands are not burdensome (1 Joh 5:2). Why? Because we are born again (1 Joh 5:4). It is through rebirth that we receive a new nature where the Holy Spirit dwell. The new nature, empowered by the Holy Spirit is stronger than the world and sin. That is why we can obey and love God. The Spirit desires against the flesh and these two are apposed to each other. But if we follow the Spirit, we can overcome sin and obey God (Gal 5:16). But we still have a sinful nature and we are tempted by it. We are therefore bound to sometimes make mistakes and sin. But if we live in the light, the blood of Jesus purifies us continually of past, present and future sin (1 Joh 1:7). If we are in Christ, we live under the umbrella of the cross and our sins have been paid for once and for all (1 Pet 3:18; 2 Cor 5:21). We must however confess our sin when convicted of it to restore the joy of our salvation (1 Joh 1:9; Ps. 51).
Review these few verses which address this truth.
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world-our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1John 5:3)
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. (Gal 5:16)
